Fashion Doll Friday – Cali Guy Steven 2005

As the weather has been hot I thought we’d have a beach doll today.I’m not sure if Cali Guy Steven is his official name. Often when Mattel releases a Barbie with “girl” in the name, eg “Generation Girl” “Cali Girl” it’s hard to know what to call the guys. Usually the box will say “Cali Girl” Blaine or Steven. Barbie was taking a break from Ken during this period. However I think that sounds pretty silly so I’m sticking with Cali Guy. It’s bad enough being Barbie’s accessory without being denied your gender.

Steven originally had a short sleeved navy rash shirt but it’s been so hot that he decided not to wear it.

  1. My Mom has Cali Guy Blane. This is the information that we have about him. Can anyone confirm that it is really true?

Blaine is part of the Barbie Califormia Doll collection by Mattel.

As part of a large-scale publicity promotion by the toy manufacturer Mattel, the day before Valentine’s Day in 2004, a press release was issued, stating that the world famous Fashion Doll couple, Barbie and Ken, were parting company.

Soon thereafter, Toy Fair 2004 introduced another male doll into Barbie’s Cali Girl beach-themed line of toys. This was Blaine, a boogie boarding Australian native.

“Cali Guy” Blaine Dolls appeared on store shelves late June 2004. Cali Guy Blaine doll (U.S. release) with long rooted light brown wavy hair and painted blue eyes. Blaine is wearing his original clothing but came with a boogie board which is missing.

    • Hi Donna, yes I remember this. He was released in Australia also and I think there were Blaine dolls issued for a couple of years after that until he quietly disappeared, probably to go surfing 🙂
