It’s been some time since the last vintage paper doll post as I’ve been busy with the three-dimensional variety for a few weeks. However, we have by no means come to the end of the big box of paper dolls.
This week I’d like to show you another celebrity paper doll, television personality Mary Hartline.
I have to admit that I had never heard of her when Naomi first started talking about Mary Hartline paper dolls. Luckily Naomi had already researched her so I can tell you that she became known as the star of the (US) ABC network television show “Super Circus”. She sang, did comedy sketches and acted as a product presenter, this was how live television handled commercials in those days. She worked on other television programs as well including her own “Mary Hartline Show” for a short time. She also worked in radio.
Mary seems to have been a very popular personality with several sets of paper dolls featuring her in street clothes and show costumes being issued by Whitman. There were also Mary Hartline dolls which were based on Ideal’s Toni dolls. I have included some links at the end of this post if you would like to learn more about Mary.
There is one vintage Mary Hartline paper doll in the box of dolls and as Naomi was keen to get reproductions of it and the other sets as well. I bought her two for her birthday a couple of months ago.
Here is vintage Mary Hartline with one of her gowns and some images of the 1953 Mary Hartline paper doll book by Whitman. As with most of the Whitman celebrity paper dolls the book has two dolls in slightly different poses.
This set, also by Whitman, was issued in 1959 and also has two dolls.
